Chapter 59: Goblin
“How could I have known?”
Pei Xiqing glanced at the corner of the desk out of the corner of her eye.
Several official documents were stacked neatly on the smooth wood, all bearing bold signatures at the bottom. Duan Xiaolin’s name was clearly written across the lines reserved explicitly for the Chief Judge’s personal authorization.
Even on the case files he had brought back to the villa the previous night, the headers plainly read: To the Chief Judge…
If she had paid closer attention to those details at the time, she wouldn’t have panicked and run into the stairwell.
Pei Xiqing’s ears flushed a bright pink. “The information was already classified, which just proves I really wasn’t peeking at the documents in your hands back then.”
Duan Xiaolin smiled faintly. “Mm.”
Pei Xiqing struggled to slide down, pushing against his chest with her palms. But before her toes could even touch the floorboards, the man clamped his hands around her waist and pulled her right back onto the desk.
“You haven’t admitted your mistake yet,” he murmured.
She blinked in disbelief. What?
“I’m completely innocent and didn’t do anything wrong,” Pei Xiqing said, biting her lip. “I was brave enough to take responsibility for my actions, yet instead of praising me, you want me to admit to a mistake? You’re simply…”
“Simply what?” He raised an eyebrow.
“You’re just bullying me!”
Duan Xiaolin was clearly in a rare good mood. He leaned over her against the desk, gently pinching her cheeks as he pressed one soft kiss after another against her lips. His movements were incredibly patient at first, but it didn’t take long for his ruthless nature to show.
He stood right against the edge of the table, his face entirely expressionless, but his hands moved boldly. His palms slid down from her shoulders, slipping beneath her loose jacket to push aside the thin straps of her undershirt, touching her skin with absolute familiarity.
Pei Xiqing felt a wave of intense embarrassment.
He always loved to play tricks on her like this, especially when she was trapped.
He kissed her until her breathing grew shallow and uneven. Caught up in the sensation, she accidentally bit his lip with a tiny bit of force.
That small prick seemed to snap a nerve in his brain. Duan Xiaolin instantly deepened the kiss, his tongue invading her mouth so fiercely that she felt entirely breathless and suffocated.
“You did do one thing wrong,” he whispered against her ear when he finally pulled back a fraction. His breathing was perfectly steady, his face calm and unbothered.
“…What?” she gasped.
“You forgot that if you ever get into any trouble, you can always come straight to me,” he murmured, his voice low and dangerous. He pressed one more kiss to the corner of her mouth, this cold-faced tyrant suddenly offering a line of pure sweetness. “Have some faith in me, baby.”
“Huh?!” Her entire body shuddered, her eyes snapping wide open.
Duan Xiaolin was already calmly fixing the loosened straps of her undershirt. His glasses were still sitting perfectly on his bridge, completely undisturbed by the frantic embrace. He was remarkably thorough, but he didn’t seem to have much skill with delicate clothing; after working at the fabric for five minutes, he had only managed to tie two messy knots.
His long knuckles kept brushing against the bare skin of her shoulders, moving slowly and methodically.
She highly suspected he was doing this on purpose just to torment her.
The intense kiss and his sweeping touch had left her feeling completely exposed and overly sensitive. Her skin felt hot, and a traitorous part of her mind actually wanted him to keep touching her.
Frantic to stop the feeling, she grabbed his wrists. “I can do it myself.”
Duan Xiaolin’s gaze darkened as he slowly withdrew his hands. “Alright.”
But the exact second she struggled to adjust her clothes, the man grabbed both of her arms, pinned them firmly behind her back, and leaned his weight over her frame again.
“It isn’t tied properly,” he rasped, his voice rough.
“It is tied—”
“No.”
With a quick flick of his fingers, the fabric loosened again, and his palm slid down her spine.
He held both of her wrists behind her back with just one hand, using his immense strength to keep her still, while his other hand remained pressed firmly against her side. He lowered his head, his warm breath falling against her collarbone as he began to kiss his way down her neck, leaving soft marks against her skin.
Pei Xiqing instantly realized what he wanted. He intended to kiss her all the way down without any restraint.
She suddenly wrenched her chin to the side, summoning a sudden burst of courage to hook her fingers under his jaw, forcing him to look at her. “Wait a minute.”
Duan Xiaolin actually paused, letting her hold his jaw as he tilted his head. “Mm?”
“Do you want me… in even more places?” she asked, her voice dropping to a teasing whisper.
“Isn’t that a bit obvious?”
Pei Xiqing deliberately narrowed her eyes. She trailed her fingertips down his neck, tapping his protruding Adam’s apple before sliding her hand lower. “Do I still need to admit to that mistake?”
Duan Xiaolin’s eyes narrowed to sharp slits. “No need.”
Some people in the base claimed she didn’t understand the reality of relationships, but her gaze fluctuated so easily between pure innocence and deep charm. She looked exactly like a beautiful, ignorant goblin.
He looked down at her, his voice deceptively calm. “Are you entirely certain you want to keep playing this game with me?”
Pei Xiqing’s fingers flinched back.
Uh oh.
She had pushed the wrong button.
Yet, she didn’t feel any real fear. Her heart was hammering faster and faster against her ribs, a thrill running through her veins. Touching Duan Xiaolin’s dangerous side always came with a penalty, but she didn’t want to calculate the consequences right now.
“Don’t be angry, brother~” she murmured, wrapping her arms around his neck to pull him down. “There is a massive squad of guards outside right now trying to arrest me as a spy. I’m incredibly nervous. If they barge in and catch us halfway through, it might leave you with a bit of psychological trauma. That wouldn’t be good for a man’s health.”
Duan Xiaolin pinched her chin, a dark glint in his eyes. “Who taught you to broadcast such ridiculous sentences?”
“Don’t you want to do this with me?” she countered, looking right at him.
The man kept his face completely cold and unbothered.
“But you clearly like it very much,” she added softly, her words hitting his composure like a hammer.
Duan Xiaolin couldn’t remember how many times he had been deliberately seduced by a woman in his life. But he knew with absolute certainty that every single time it had ever happened, the culprit was her.
