Chapter 68 – Why is Everyone Trying to Annoy Her One By One?
The two of them kept chatting as if no one else existed, walking farther and farther away.
Lin Yimo’s gaze followed Lin Yuejiu until her figure completely disappeared.
Beside him, Lin Rumeng tugged on his sleeve:
“Let’s go home, brother. It’s already late.”
Lin Yimo snapped out of his thoughts, lowered his head to look at his biological sister.
“Were you doing that on purpose just now?”
Lin Rumeng feigned confusion:
“On purpose? What do you mean, brother?”
“You overheard our conversation earlier. Did you deliberately come out to meet your sister?”
Lin Rumeng’s smile was sweet and obedient:
“I didn’t, brother. I really just wanted to talk with her. You should’ve seen it yourself—sister doesn’t really like me. At school I never even get the chance to speak to her. She never looks at me.”
“Really?” Lin Yimo narrowed his eyes slightly.
“Of course, brother. I’m your sister. How could I lie to you?”
Seeing her look so sincere, Lin Yimo chose, for now, to believe her.
“Let’s go home.”
“Okay, brother.”
After returning home, Lin Rumeng said goodnight to everyone and went back to her room. As soon as she closed the door, the smile on her face vanished. She walked over to her desk and picked up a family photo taken after she returned to the Lin household. In the photo, she stood at the center, with Father Lin and Mother Lin beside her, and Lin Yimo too. Everyone was smiling happily.
Lin Rumeng glanced at it quietly, then put it down. So what if brother likes her now? In the Lin family, it’s me who belongs here. I’m the true daughter of the Lin family. This position can’t be replaced by anyone.
Meanwhile, in the room next door, Lin Yimo stood staring at the wall—the wall that separated his room from Lin Rumeng’s. He couldn’t shake off a strange feeling. Some of Lin Rumeng’s behavior lately was unusual. Normally, she never asked to go for walks, and after dinner she always just returned to her room. Recently though, she had changed—practicing violin more diligently, even once asking their parents to find her a tutor. She had been very serious about studying too, always going back to her room after meals to study.
At times, Lin Yimo even thought he saw traces of Lin Yuejiu in her.
Although this biological sister hadn’t been back at the Lin family for long, Yimo had already observed her clearly. She wasn’t naturally hardworking—her sweet mouth was what pleased Grandfather Lin. She liked luxury items, got overly excited whenever she received new clothes, always eager to wear them out to show off. She also loved inviting a certain classmate, Lan Qingqing, over. Every time that girl came, Rumeng was especially cheerful, introducing her to many things.
Lin Yimo rubbed his chin. Looks like it’s time I take a closer look into this sister of mine.
Outside the school gates, Xu Nianshen escorted Lin Yuejiu.
“We’re here. Go on inside.”
“Okay. You should hurry back too.”
“Mm. I’ll call you tonight.”
“Alright.” Yuejiu waved at him and was about to turn away when Nianshen suddenly called her again. She turned back with confusion.
“What is it?”
The corners of his mouth curved up.
“Tonight, make sure you don’t roll off the bed again. It’ll hurt.”
Lin Yuejiu: “…”
“None of your business!”
Xu Nianshen stood there laughing.
She’s way too cute.
On the way back to the dorm, Yuejiu was still fuming, scolding him in her head. So annoying.
Chen Qianxi, with a lollipop in her mouth, saw her return.
“Jiujiu, you’re back? Want a lollipop?” She pulled the candy from her mouth and offered it to her.
Lin Yuejiu didn’t even glance at it.
“No thanks.”
Chen Qianxi popped it back in her mouth.
“Oh, okay. I was just being polite anyway.”
Lin Yuejiu: “…”
Why is everyone trying to piss me off, one by one?
That night, around nine o’clock, Yuejiu received a message. Without looking, she already knew who it was from. She purposely let it sit for a few minutes before opening it.
Xu Nianshen: [Good night.]
Another message quickly followed:
[Go to bed early, don’t stay up late. You’ll get dark circles.]
Then another:
[Also, I was wrong. Could you please, magnanimous one, forgive my behavior?]
Lin Yuejiu snorted twice before replying:
[Since you put it that way, I’ll forgive you.]
Xu Nianshen: [Thank you.]
Lin Yuejiu: [You’re welcome. You should sleep early too. Good night.]
The next morning, by the time Xu Nianshen arrived in class, Yuejiu was already at her desk working on exercises.
He placed a warm bottle of milk on her desk. She looked up.
He smiled at her:
“Drinking warm milk in the morning is good for your health, and it helps with studying.”
Yuejiu picked up the milk and smiled faintly.
“I’ve never heard that tagline before.”
“Made it up myself.”
She chuckled softly, poked in the straw, and took a sip.
“Not bad.”
“Five yuan a bottle,” he said lazily.
She immediately set it down and pushed it back toward him.
“Forget it then.”
“Once consumed, no refunds.”
“The market price for this brand is three yuan. Raising it by two is unreasonable. Did the Price Bureau approve this?”
He spread his hands innocently.
She gave him a glance, then snatched the milk back and resumed drinking.
He stretched his hand toward her.
“What?”
“Pay up.”
She ignored him.
He let out a laugh of disbelief.
“Planning to drink bully milk?”
She wagged her finger in front of him.
“No, this is robbery. Open and aboveboard robbery.”
Holding the milk in her hand, her face was deadly serious. On closer look, a bit of milk had stuck to her pink lips. Xu Nianshen raised an eyebrow. He had wanted to reach out, but mindful of the public setting, he instead pulled a tissue from his pocket, lightly pressing it against her lips. Yuejiu instinctively caught it with her free hand, and by the time she realized, he was already sitting back in his seat.
“Wipe your mouth, little milk cat.”
She quickly dabbed her lips with the tissue.
A soft laugh came from nearby.
Usually, it was Chen Qianxi who rushed to the frontlines of “sugar moments,” but this time her deskmate, Du Zhuo, had beaten her to it.
For the first time witnessing such a sweet moment live, Du Zhuo was a little excited. He quickly snapped some pictures and sent them to Chen Qianxi first, then shared them in their “sugar group.” After all, his deskmate had instructed him: if he ever saw sweetness while she was away, he had to inform her immediately.
Chen Qianxi: [!! I’ll be right there!!]
By the time she hurried back breathlessly, the two were already calmly bent over their exercises.
Chen Qianxi looked at Du Zhuo.
He spread his hands—the sweetness is gone.
Chen Qianxi bit down on her metaphorical handkerchief and cried inside:
She missed seeing the sweetness firsthand!
In the “shipping group chat.”
Class Monitor: [@Everyone, there’s sugar to ship!]
[Just witnessed it live, it was so sweet!]
[That “little milk cat” nickname is way too sweet and pampering! I’m in love!]
[I mean, just hearing it makes me squeal.]
[So basically, did my “Nianshen–Yuejiu CP” go public today? Yes, it did!]
Chen Qianxi read the group messages and almost cried for real—she hadn’t been there to witness the sugar drop in person!
When Lin Yuejiu noticed how upset she looked, she even asked her what was wrong.
That only made Chen Qianxi even sadder.
Lin Yuejiu: “???”
At that moment, Du Zhuo quickly held a book up to cover Chen Qianxi’s face. “Goddess Lin, she’s just upset because she couldn’t solve a question. No need to worry about her.”
“Ah, I see. Then… do you need me to teach you guys? Or maybe ask Xu Nianshen to help you?”
“No, no, that won’t be necessary. We can figure it out ourselves after looking at it a bit more. Thank you, Goddess Lin.”
“Ah, okay.”
Lin Yuejiu watched Du Zhuo drag Chen Qianxi away, completely puzzled.
In a certain small town, Lin Yimo arrived, checking the map for the marked spot before heading toward it.
Today, he came here to investigate. He had requested leave from the company board, telling Father Lin and Mother Lin it was a business trip. Soon, he stopped in front of a two-story house—a fairly typical middle-class home. He knocked on the door.
“Who is it?” Someone opened the door slightly. It was a teenage boy, phone in hand, game noises still coming from it.
The boy eyed him, narrowing the gap of the door even more, a bit wary. “Who are you?”
Lin Yimo gave him a friendly smile. “Hello, I mean no harm. I’m just here to look into something.”
“Look into something? Are you a reporter?”
Lin Yimo thought for a second. “Something like that.”
“Then you’ve got the wrong place. Nobody famous lives here.”
The boy started to shut the door, but Lin Yimo quickly reached out and stopped it. “I’m here to ask about Lin Rumeng.”
The boy froze. “You’re here to ask about my sis—about Lin Rumeng?”
“…Your sister? She’s your sister?”
“…She used to be.”
“Sorry, but… could you ask your mother to come out for a moment?”
“Wait here.” The boy turned and shouted into the house, “Mom! Someone’s here to see you!”
A middle-aged woman wearing an apron walked out from the kitchen, drying her damp hands on both sides of it as she approached. “Who is it?”
“Mom, he says he wants to ask about her.”
The woman froze. “Your sister?” Then she looked at Lin Yimo at the door. “Are you from the Lin family?”
Fearing she might reject him outright, Lin Yimo quickly explained, “I was sent by our chairman to learn more about Miss Lin Rumeng. The chairman wishes to know more details about her past life, so I was asked to come to her old home and gather some information.”
“I see.” The woman’s guarded posture eased immediately. “Then please, come in.”
“Thank you.” Lin Yimo bowed politely. “Should I take off my shoes?”
“No need, no need. This isn’t some fancy place. Please, have a seat.”
