Chapter 13: The Breeding Task – Roommate Gets Swallowed
By the time Su Ning came back to her senses, she was already inside the instance of the “Breeding Farm”.
Looking around at the unfamiliar environment, Su Ning felt a bit lost.
She glanced around and found herself inside a simple, shabby dormitory.
Before she could take her next step, a nervous voice suddenly rang out beside her, “Are you a player too?”
Startled by the unexpected voice, Su Ning quickly turned her head and saw someone in a similar situation standing by the bed.
The girl looked malnourished, her face thin and pitiful.
There was no need to guess — Su Ning immediately realized that this person must also be a player.
This instance was completely different from the previous one, “Virus Town”. Su Ning hadn’t expected to spawn together with another player upon entering.
The change took her by surprise, but she quickly calmed down and started thinking about how to deal with the situation.
After all, this new instance was full of unknowns and challenges. She had to adapt quickly and find a way to survive.
A thought flashed through her mind: Looks like this time I must find a chance to act alone if I want to survive this instance!
If she didn’t act alone, how could she exploit her talent and milk the instance for rewards?
Su Ning started observing the girl beside her, and of course, the girl was also sizing her up.
Su Ning answered the girl’s question, “Yeah, I’m a player too. By the way, what’s your name?”
As soon as she finished speaking, Su Ning activated her Scavenger’s Eye skill on the other girl.
The other player’s information immediately appeared before Su Ning’s eyes.
[Player: Zhang Kexin]
Talent – Dexterous Hands: Exceptional speed in handmade crafting.
Skills: None
This was one of the additional functions Su Ning had discovered during her week of working — her ability could not only identify items but also reveal names and basic info of other players.
This discovery had helped Su Ning gather a lot of hidden information.
For example, her neighbor Zhang Li’s so-called talent “Super Strength” was actually just a “Body Reinforcement” ability — a much weaker version.
Seeing Su Ning’s question, hesitation flashed across the other girl’s eyes, but she quickly made up her mind and said, “My name is Zhang Xin.”
Su Ning raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment on the false name — it was human nature to be cautious.
She did the same herself.
“I’m Zhang Li,” she replied, hiding her real name as well.
Seeing that Su Ning was also a girl, Zhang Kexin relaxed noticeably.
Zhang Kexin asked, “So what’s going on now? Has the game started? What are we supposed to do in this instance?”
Clearly, the dorm only had the two of them. Su Ning wasn’t sure about the situation either.
But based on her experience in Virus Town, she figured they’d have to survive for seven days in this instance.
Before they could talk more, a system message rang in their ears:
[Ding! Breeding Farm mission activated. Players, prepare yourselves!]
[Ding! Congratulations, you have received a temporary identity: Breeder!]
[Level 1 Breeder: You are employees hired by the Moko Tribe’s Breeding Farm. Do your job properly, or your life may be in danger.]
[Task 1: Guard the flowers in the garden. Prevent insect damage and honeybee harvesting!]
[Reward: 10 copper coins]
[Task 2: Feed the Meaty Chickens!]
[Reward: 10 copper coins, +100 breeder experience!]
[Note: Failing a task will result in serious consequences!]
Su Ning stared at the sudden tasks in disbelief.
“I didn’t expect this instance to come with actual missions!”
She also noticed the system’s last warning: serious consequences if failed.
“What kind of consequences? Could it be death?”
It was possible. After all, this was a survival game — of course it would be dangerous.
Although the two tasks seemed simple — guarding flowers and feeding chickens —
Su Ning still felt that something was off.
“Moko Tribe Breeding Farm? What kind of race is that? Never heard of it.”
There was simply not enough information in the tasks.
She asked Zhang Kexin if her tasks were the same, but the answer surprised her.
Zhang Kexin shook her head, “I only have one task: to harvest fruit from the Giant Bloom Flower!”
Hearing that Su Ning had more tasks than she did, Zhang Kexin looked delighted — it meant Su Ning was more likely to fail than she was.
In her mind, this made her safer than Su Ning.
But Su Ning didn’t think having fewer tasks meant you were safer.
Just as the two continued talking, a bell rang outside the dormitory.
“DONG! DONG!”
Su Ning and Zhang Kexin headed outside to take a look.
The moment Su Ning opened the door, the scene before her made both of them widen their eyes.
The dorms weren’t the only one — it turned out that there were many players who had entered the Breeding Farm instance.
“Work begins! Breeders, go to your designated work areas now!”
A booming voice exploded beside them.
Su Ning looked toward the source and saw a three-meter-tall giant wielding a massive axe shouting orders at each dorm room’s occupants.
“So this is a Moko?”
Su Ning’s heart shook violently.
There were at least a thousand players around her.
“Could it be that failure means punishment by the Moko Tribe?”
That’s what Su Ning suspected.
Though she couldn’t understand their language, she could sense the meaning clearly.
Following the signs, she went to her work zone.
She soon arrived at a massive farm.
There she saw the garden she was to guard and the Meaty Chickens she was supposed to feed.
Looking at the flowers, Su Ning had no idea what species they were.
“Yep, definitely different from anything on Earth.”
But what surprised her most was the size of the Meaty Chickens.
Although they looked like Earth chickens, they were vastly bigger — each one was as tall as Su Ning herself.
Not just the chickens — even the flowers were gigantic.
Su Ning quickly realized the creatures in this instance were much larger than those on Earth.
Just as she was thinking about how to start the task, she heard Zhang Kexin let out a blood-curdling scream.
Each person had a different farm, but since Zhang Kexin’s farm was right next to hers, Su Ning could see everything that was happening.
She remembered her task was to harvest fruit from the Giant Bloom Flower.
“Wait, could it be dangerous?”
Su Ning leaned over the railing and looked in — she saw Zhang Kexin being half-swallowed by something that looked like a giant carnivorous flower!
She activated Scavenger’s Eye!
[Giant Bloom Flower] – A carnivorous, omnivorous plant. Produces very sweet fruit called Giant Bloom Fruit, but its main body is extremely dangerous. Touching the fruit without caution will trigger an attack.
Note: Stroking (tickling) the flower’s root will cause it to drop fruit automatically.
Su Ning could only watch as her roommate was completely swallowed by the flower.
“As expected, fewer tasks = greater danger!”
Su Ning looked at her own missions again, wondering where the threat in hers might lie.
Clearly, this Breeding Farm instance was far from simple.
