Chapter 47: Golden Boy and Jade Girl
The two patrol officers approached. One wore an Ox-Head mask, and the other wore a Horse-Face mask.
If You’re Bad, Practice More spotted the two guards keeping order and let out a chuckle. “This dungeon is really well made. It even has Ox-Head and Horse-Face! How interesting.”
Lin Huai studied the two figures intently. Leaning in close, she whispered her quick plan into If You’re Bad, Practice More’s ear. Then, looking upset, the two of them hurried over to intercept the guards.
“Big Brother Ox-Head, you have to help me!” Lin Huai cried out. “Look at this—she spilled water all over my certificate! The ink is completely smeared, and now the permit office won’t accept it! What am I supposed to do?”
Ox-Head came to a halt, looking down at the frantic girl waving a smudged document with a ruined stamp.
The woman beside her was just as loud and aggressive. If You’re Bad, Practice More snapped irritably, “Big Brother Horse-Face, look at her! She has the nerve to blame me? She’s the one who ripped my paper! Look, the corner is gone, and the entire name column is missing! My certificate is completely ruined too! How am I supposed to get my permit?”
Right in front of Ox-Head and Horse-Face, the two women began shouting and arguing back and forth like squabbling fishwives.
Ox-Head and Horse-Face exchanged a tired glance. Being pulled left and right by two noisy women, their eyes filled with deep misery.
Truly, whether in the mortal world or the underworld, women were impossible to deal with.
To make things even more complicated, while pretending to argue, Lin Huai secretly slipped two Yin energy crystals straight into Ox-Head’s palm.
His head pounded from the noise, but his hand closed tightly around the crystals. Raising a heavy arm, he grunted in a deep, booming voice, “Stop shouting! A damaged certificate is completely invalid and has to be reissued! I’ll take you to the office to see the Earth God Temple’s Golden Boy and Jade Girl. They can replace your paperwork.”
The Earth God Temple’s Golden Boy and Jade Girl?
Could they be hidden NPCs in this dungeon? Lin Huai’s eyes flashed with interest. She exchanged a quick look with If You’re Bad, Practice More and nodded eagerly. “Thank you so much, Big Brothers Ox-Head and Horse-Face!”
The two guards led them through the crowd, heading around to the dark woods behind the main shrine.
Ox-Head stomped his heavy trident against the ground. The black mist hanging over the trees parted at once, revealing a small stone hall nestled in the clearing, built in the same style as the Earth God Temple.
Ox-Head pointed toward the small building. “Go inside. The Golden Boy and Jade Girl are waiting for you.”
Seeing the hall, Lin Huai felt a sudden knot in her stomach. The building sat just two rows of trees away from the forest edge… Had they been watching when she forged the fake certificate earlier?
There was no turning back now. With the guards waiting, Lin Huai braced herself and stepped forward.
Before walking away, she discreetly slipped two Yin energy crystals into Horse-Face’s hand as well. “Thank you both for your trouble. It’s just a small token of gratitude. Please have a drink on me later!”
Ox-Head and Horse-Face grinned behind their masks and turned back toward the plaza, happily discussing how they would visit the Ghost Market for drinks once their shift ended.
After the guards left, Lin Huai and If You’re Bad, Practice More walked up to the small building. Lin Huai tapped twice on the wooden door.
A lazy child’s voice called from within: “Come in.”
Pushing the door open, they stepped inside. Sitting on a large sofa in the office were two small children with upright pigtails—the Golden Boy and Jade Girl. Both were busy counting money.
Holding a thick stack of paper underworld coins, Golden Boy didn’t even look up as he muttered, “Replacements are available.”
Jade Girl added in a singsong voice, “Pay the fee, and we’ll print a new one.”
Lin Huai didn’t waste time with paper coins. She pulled ten Yin energy crystals from her bag and laid them flat on the table. “Are these enough?”
Golden Boy and Jade Girl collected mountains of paper underworld coins just to exchange them for Yin energy crystals later. They never expected an ordinary player to be so generous and place ten pure crystals on the table at once!
Both children’s eyes widened with pure greed.
Golden Boy reached out hungrily to snatch the crystals. “Enough! More than enough! Just two certificates, right? Consider it done!”
Jade Girl beamed with excitement. “Since you know how to show respect, we’ll pretend we didn’t see you making fake documents by the trees earlier!”
They really did see it!
Lin Huai felt immensely relieved that she had become a wealthy crystal magnate in this life, holding hundreds of Yin crystals in reserve.
Just as Golden Boy’s fingers were about to touch the stones, Lin Huai pressed her palm firmly over them. Looking him in the eye, she said coolly, “Ten crystals just for two cancellation certificates is far too expensive. I don’t want death certificates.”
Golden Boy pulled his hand back, his expression turning sharp and guarded. “Then what do you want?”
Jade Girl frowned with suspicion. “Without a cancellation certificate, you can’t receive a travel permit.”
Standing nearby, If You’re Bad, Practice More watched Lin Huai negotiate with absolute composure, barely daring to breathe. When Lin Huai tossed out ten Yin crystals so casually, her jaw dropped. This was the true wealth of the server’s number-one player!
From the moment Lin Huai saw the pair counting money, she knew they could be bought.
Any problem that could be solved with money wasn’t really a problem at all.
Lin Huai brought out another ten crystals and placed them on the table. “I’ll add ten more. I don’t want certificates. I want official travel permits. Two of them!”
Her request clearly crossed a line. Golden Boy and Jade Girl both furrowed their brows in distress. “That’s asking too much. It’s too difficult. If we skip the registration procedure, how are we supposed to explain it to headquarters?”
Lin Huai raised an eyebrow, a cold smile touching her lips. “Really? Then how do you plan to explain collecting registration and processing fees for your own pockets?”
Golden Boy gasped in shock. “How do you know about that?!”
A flash of panic showed on Jade Girl’s face. “So what if you know? You have nowhere to report us anyway!”
Lin Huai tilted her head calmly. “I happen to know an outpost manager who has a direct line to headquarters. I can also summon my system assistant to file a report right now. As the server’s number-one player, the farther I travel, the sooner I’ll meet someone from the higher bureaus.”
The two children stared at her, their confidence crumbling under her steady gaze. Finally, Golden Boy gave in. “Fine! We can give you the travel permits directly. But you have to swear not to report us, and you can’t breathe a word of this to any other players!”
Jade Girl puffed out her cheeks with a cold huff. “And you have to give us ten more crystals!”
Lin Huai smiled softly. “Deal.”
She handed over thirty Yin energy crystals in total. In return, Golden Boy produced two genuine travel permits. With a wave of his small hand, a blast of wind swept the two women out the door.
The dark mist closed in behind them, completely hiding the trees and the stone hall once more.
Lin Huai looked down at the travel permit in her hand. It was identical to the one she had held in her previous life, but the questions in her heart only multiplied.
If You’re Bad, Practice More turned her permit over and over in complete disbelief. “Boss, you are incredible! I had no idea this game could be played like this!”
She sighed, half in awe and half in sorrow. “Does having money really let you unlock hidden content just like that? When will I ever be that rich? Even if I stumbled across a secret NPC myself, I’d probably miss out just because I couldn’t afford the bribe!”
