Chapter 26: Deadly Infection 11
Game Day 12—
It wasn’t until morning that everyone realized more than one household had been robbed yesterday—it was three households in total, and all three had shown generosity yesterday!
The robbed individuals were now crying in the group chat, lamenting that their food, stored medicine, and cash had all been stolen.
All their supplies were gone, and now they were just begging their neighbors for a little help.
However, today’s WeChat group was exceptionally quiet.
Anyone with a brain could sense that the robbers last night were definitely people from within the residential area. They had targeted these few households because they could afford to give away surplus items, then secretly went upstairs under the cover of night to take away their means of survival.
Who would dare to give anything now?
Wouldn’t that be telling those with ill intentions that they were a big fat sheep?
After the lesson learned by the three households, the people who had believed in human kindness and stood together through adversity yesterday, today began to guard against each other. No matter how much the three households pleaded or complained in the group chat, no one was willing to offer a helping hand again.
Finally, the three households’ pleas turned into anger, resentment, and curses.
The internal environment of the residential area was subtly changing without anyone realizing it.
As much as Chu Yian had felt guilty before, she felt equally fortunate now.
She reaffirmed her belief in only looking out for herself. It would be enough if she could survive these thirty days and find the antidote; she wouldn’t think about others.
On the other side, among the four households that had donated supplies, the only one that hadn’t been robbed was filled with trepidation.
This household belonged to a couple.
They worked in self-media, specializing in food reviews, so when the infectious disease locked down the residential area, their home was stocked with many snacks.
Although these foods weren’t very nutritious, they were filling.
Yesterday, seeing how pitiful the robbed people were, they had sent out some drinks, never expecting that this act of kindness would bring trouble.
The robbers hadn’t touched them last night, but that didn’t mean they would spare them today. The couple was anxious and had already started barricading their front door with existing items in their home.
Night fell.
There were no electric lights, no moon, and no stars. The pitch-black darkness, where one couldn’t see their hand in front of their face, was quietly brewing evil.
A sharp scream rang out; someone else had been robbed after their door was forced open. Disturbances were happening all around; this time, the scope was wider and more widespread than yesterday.
Roars, fights, screams, cries, shrieks, pleas for mercy.
Law and order had disintegrated in two nights.
Chu Yian couldn’t sleep. She sat up and looked out the window. It was pitch black outside, with only various sounds echoing over the residential area.
Just then, her phone suddenly lit up.
“Asleep? There’s a sound at the stairwell door.”
Chu Yian saw the message and sat up abruptly. What?!
She put on her mask and jacket, holding the baseball bat she had drawn from the treasure box.
When she came out, Lu Qingyuan was already waiting at the door. They exchanged a glance and then walked towards the stairwell door.
Screech—
Clatter clatter—
Two metallic scraping sounds echoed in the quiet corridor, growing closer. Chu Yian saw the faint flickering of a phone light at the corridor entrance. A very long fruit knife was poking out from the crack in the door, constantly jabbing up and down.
She turned to look at Lu Qingyuan. What should they do?
The main problem was not knowing how many people were on the other side. If there were more than three outside, the two of them might not be easy to deal with.
Lu Qingyuan reached out and grabbed the blade of the long knife, instantly making it impossible for the person on the other side to pull it back.
“Who’s there?”
His voice was cold and steady. Instead, the person trying to pry open their door seemed a bit flustered. “We thought no one was here, so we wanted to come in and look for supplies.”
“Oh… someone is here.”
“Sorry, brother.”
What ‘looking for supplies’? They were clearly here to rob in the middle of the night. Chu Yian knew it without even thinking.
Lu Qingyuan finally released the long knife. “Get out.”
There was a rustling of things being gathered and the sound of footsteps leaving outside. They were probably scared too, which was why they ran so quickly after being discovered.
After the people left, Chu Yian and Lu Qingyuan checked the doors of the two stairwell exits again, securing the loose door.
“Be more vigilant at night recently, and always keep an eye on your phone messages.”
Lu Qingyuan said before entering his room.
“Uh, my phone is almost out of battery.”
Chu Yian held up her phone, which had turned red with low battery.
Lu Qingyuan paused in the act of closing his door. “Wait.”
With that, he went inside and came out with a black power bank. “Use this.”
Chu Yian didn’t decline and took it directly. But then she suddenly noticed that the charger didn’t seem to have a port for a data cable.
Seeing this, Lu Qingyuan reached out and showed her how to press the small icon on the front. The phone and the power bank merely touched each other and began to charge.
“Alright, remember what I said.”
Lu Qingyuan closed the door with a thud.
Chu Yian returned with the item. In just a few minutes, her phone’s battery was already at fifty percent. In about ten minutes, the phone, which had only six percent battery, was fully charged.
What kind of power bank was this?
She turned on her phone’s flashlight and looked closely. There was no brand logo on it.
A moment later, she gave up.
Who cares?
As long as it works.
Game Day 13—
The WeChat group became even quieter. The few discussions that did occur were about the households that had been robbed yesterday.
Roughly, 17 households in the residential area had been robbed. From three households the day before yesterday, it had increased by nearly 6 times.
Cursing, swearing.
The entire WeChat group was now a place for the robbed households to vent their anger, all wishing those people a terrible end.
For some reason, Chu Yian felt the crisis was becoming more and more severe.
Fortunately, the treasure box’s ‘Creation from Nothing’ skill could be used again.
Chu Yian rubbed her palms, hoping her luck would be better this time and she would draw a powerful weapon.
Thinking of this, she couldn’t help but bow to the treasure box. “Please give me something powerful!”
With that, she reached her hand into the treasure box.
She felt something. It was a cold, cylindrical object, and it was particularly heavy. She used all her might to drag the item out of the treasure box, and then its description appeared before her.
“Lu Bu’s Fangtian Halberd”
“Note: Will be retrieved after this round of the game ends.”
“Good Item’s Inner Voice: Two meters long, one hundred jin heavy. Wield this Fangtian Halberd, and who can contend with you?”
Whether she could contend with anyone was unclear; the key was that she couldn’t even lift it.
Chu Yian used all her strength just to barely drag the Fangtian Halberd out.
Was she supposed to use this… for weightlifting?
“Big Brother treasure box, you even have Lu Bu’s Fangtian Halberd. Why can’t your thinking be a bit more expansive? How about Sun Wukong’s Golden Cudgel or Nezha’s Universe Ring?”
Even if she couldn’t lift those, at least they were divine artifacts.
