Chapter 143: World Five — The Prison Overlord and the Prison Beauty
She felt as though she’d just heard something utterly unbelievable. How could a grown man be…? Was Little Eight messing with her?
Nan Xun was about to ask more when the police officer across from her lost his patience. With a bang, the baton slammed down on the table as he roared, “Su Mobai! Do you really think staying silent will get you off the hook? I’m just taking a statement right now—can you cooperate a little?!”
Recalling the scene of the killing, Nan Xun immediately felt that this Su Mobai was unbelievably unlucky.
Su Mobai had indeed killed someone—but it was accidental. This world was quite similar to Nan Xun’s real one. In cases of accidental homicide, the sentence would usually be five to ten years at most.
Su Mobai was only eighteen. If he got five years, he’d be out at twenty-three; even with ten years, he’d still be only twenty-eight. He was young either way. The problem was that the person he accidentally killed happened to be a well-known rich second-generation heir in the city. The saying “money makes the devil push the millstone” held true everywhere. The victim Cheng Hao’s parents had lost their only son and naturally didn’t want Su Mobai to have an easy time. They were doing everything they could to have him killed, insisting on pinning the charge of intentional murder on him.
What made it even more infuriating was that Su Mobai had gotten into the fight to protect his roommate—yet after the incident, that roommate refused to come forward and testify.
If the charge became intentional murder, it would be serious: he’d be sentenced to this world’s mAximum penalty—life imprisonment.
Nan Xun felt stifled with anger. Looking at the officer, fury surged in her chest. She sneered and said, “Officer, how much did Cheng Hao’s dad give you to screw me over?”
The voice that came out still carried a youth’s vitality—clear and ringing. Sure enough… a man’s voice.
At her words, the officer’s eyes flew wide open as he barked, “You little punk, how dare you openly slander the police! Believe it or not, I’ll teach you a lesson with my baton!”
When he got angry, he exposed that mouthful of buck teeth, making him look even more vicious and hard to deal with.
Nan Xun bared her teeth at him. “There should be surveillance cameras in here, right? People are watching from outside. If you really dared to hit me, you’d have done it already.”
The buck-toothed officer first angrily waved the baton at her, but then seemed to think of something and laughed instead, malice written all over his face. “Kid, you can enjoy yourself for a bit longer now. Once you get to prison, you won’t have a choice anymore.”
He was about to say more when someone knocked on the door. A junior officer hurried in and whispered a few words in his ear. The buck-toothed officer’s expression changed instantly. “What? Captain Zhao from the city bureau is here? Outside? And he was just watching the surveillance footage in here?”
…
After the buck-toothed officer’s sudden change of attitude, Nan Xun was moved to another place.
She was now sitting alone in an empty room.
“Little Eight, since you put me in the wrong person, is there any way to switch me back?” With no one around, Nan Xun quickly asked.
Little Eight was silent for a moment before replying, “I’m afraid not. In each world, you can only transmigrate into one body. Doing it again would alter too many trajectories and make it easy for the Heavenly Dao to notice us. If that happens, we’re both finished.”
After a pause, Little Eight added regretfully, “Looks like we’ll have to give up on this world. Darling, could you bear with it for a bit? I just shattered the void and need time to recuperate. In the previous world, I poured a lot of spiritual power into the Spirit-Gathering Formation for you, and when we left, I had to expend quite a bit of power to shake off that strange force. This time, the fastest I can recover will probably be about three years.”
Before Nan Xun could start cursing, Little Eight began acting cute. “Mwah mwah, darling, three years really is the fastest! You have to understand, this is a low-level world with very thin spiritual energy. Normally it takes me five or six years to recover. This time, I’m really going all out for you.”
Nan Xun: “…I really should thank you for that. Seriously though, you’re being unusually proactive this time—any other reason?”
Little Eight confessed honestly, “Yes. Because three years from now is when Su Mobai dies a miserable death.”
Nan Xun paused. She didn’t get angry, only replied, “Alright, I understand. Focus on replenishing your spiritual power.”
Little Eight let out a surprised sound. “Darling, why aren’t you blaming me?”
Nan Xun said, “Blaming you wouldn’t help anyway.”
Little Eight was so moved it was practically sobbing. “Wuwuwu, I’ll recover my spiritual power as soon as possible for your sake!”
Nan Xun immediately followed up, “Little Eight, I’m actually very curious. Shattering the void seems to consume a lot of your spiritual power each time. But the first time, when you tricked me into signing the soul contract and put on an act in front of me, you took me through so many worlds. After all that, you only turned into a juvenile Void Beast—how come you didn’t run out of power and die?”
Hearing the mockery in Nan Xun’s words, Little Eight instantly felt aggrieved. “If I didn’t put on an act, how could I gain your trust? Actually, shattering the void within the same world layer is very easy for me. But crossing worlds and layers—and doing it while dragging along dead weight—well, that’s a bit…”
That “dead weight” was obviously referring to Nan Xun.
“Um… I’m going into secluded cultivation now. To improve efficiency, I won’t be able to chat with you during this period. Take care of yourself. Prison life is a bit tough, so you absolutely have to hold on until I come back. If you really can’t take it anymore, just shout my name three times in your heart. I’ll think of a way to preserve your primordial spirit first, then shatter the void and leave.”
Nan Xun responded with a simple acknowledgment. After that, Little Eight fell silent, having entered its closed-door cultivation.
Nan Xun sat calmly on a chair, waiting for the “Captain Zhao” the officer had mentioned.
In truth, Nan Xun was somewhat surprised. Su Mobai came from an ordinary background. His parents had died early, leaving only a grandmother to raise him. He had worked hard and finally gotten into a top university—only to end up involved in a homicide less than a year after enrolling. The shock caused his grandmother to pass away as well, leaving him completely alone in the world.
So Su Mobai didn’t know any powerful figures at all. Why would this “Captain Zhao” want to see him personally?
Just then, the door was pushed open and a middle-aged man in plain clothes walked in. He had a square face, ordinary looks, and an upright, righteous gaze—clearly someone who worked in law enforcement.
The square-faced man pulled out the chair across from Nan Xun and sat down, smiling gently at her, looking very approachable.
“I’m Captain Zhao from the city bureau’s Special Cases Task Force. You can call me Captain Zhao, or you can call me Uncle Zhao,” the man said.
Hearing his background, Nan Xun’s eyes flickered. She immediately flashed him a wide smile. “Hello, Uncle Zhao.”
When the man—no, the boy—smiled, he revealed two rows of gleaming white teeth. He looked sunny and handsome, dazzling to the eye. No matter how you looked at him, he didn’t resemble a murderer at all.
A hint of something crossed Captain Zhao’s eyes, but he quickly returned to a serious expression and said in a formulaic tone, “Su Mobai. Male. Eighteen years old. A freshman at University B. Popular, handsome, knows how to play basketball and fight, and has been crowned University B’s campus heartthrob.”
