Chapter 253: Beautiful Skin
“Too?” Pei Xiqing instantly zeroed in on her peculiar choice of words. She accepted the handkerchief Shadow silently offered, wiping the corner of her mouth. Looking at Ma Mengjia’s expression, she didn’t know what to say for a moment. “I don’t quite understand what you’re implying.”
Ma Mengjia crossed her arms. “You’re either dry-heaving like that because you ate something rotten, or because you’re pregnant. I’ve been navigating this exact phase recently, so I definitely know the symptoms better than you do.”
“Hmm?”
“Because I’m pregnant.”
?
Pei Xiqing lowered her brow, her mind flashing back to everything Ma Mengjia had put herself through over the past few weeks. A trace of complex intrigue and disbelief colored her expression.
Is she really pregnant? Though, considering she had made the explicit decision to abandon the safety of the village and strike out alone with a mercenary ability user, this outcome seemed almost inevitable.
Ever since she had unexpectedly crossed paths with Ma Mengjia again at headquarters a few days ago, Pei Xiqing had mentally prepared herself for some kind of dramatic revelation regarding the girl’s survival tactics. She just hadn’t expected the complication to manifest this quickly.
“You look exactly like someone in their first trimester,” Ma Mengjia pressed on, sounding strangely triumphant. “The way you clutched the wall and retched just now? That was a mirror image of how I acted a few days ago. So… the father of your child… it’s Brother Duan, isn’t it? Where is he, anyway?”
She craned her neck, trying to peer past Pei Xiqing into the empty room behind her. After scanning the area for a long moment, the only other presence she registered was the towering operative standing guard.
She pointed a finger at him. “Who is this man? I haven’t seen his face before. Brother Duan is nowhere to be found, and suddenly the man shadowing your steps has changed?…”
“You are completely misinterpreting the situation,” Pei Xiqing stated calmly, cutting her off. “Don’t let your imagination run wild.”
“Oh.” Ma Mengjia curled her lip in disappointment. She began absentmindedly tangling her fingers through her filthy hair, seemingly trying to pick out the dried, unknown slime clinging to the strands. She muttered softly, “I honestly thought I’d be able to catch a glimpse of Brother Duan today. I didn’t expect him to leave your side like this. He wasn’t anchoring your perimeter the last time we ran into each other either. I can’t help but wonder if something has fractured between you two… cough, cough…”
Noticing Pei Xiqing’s cold, unwavering stare, she quickly backpedaled. “Look, do you want to go to the medical bay and get checked out? Your complexion was completely off just now. Are you sure you couldn’t be pregnant?”
Pei Xiqing took a slow sip of water from her canteen and offered a slight nod. “It is highly improbable.”
Qiu Chao had just administered a comprehensive, full-body biometric scan on her shortly before she went under. He had meticulously audited her entire system two days ago before formulating the injection. If a fetal variable had actually manifested, Qiu Chao’s clinical reaction would have been anything but calm.
The exact same logic applied to Brother Duan.
“You genuinely scared me for a second,” Ma Mengjia sighed, patting her chest in exaggerated relief. “I honestly thought you had managed to hit the jackpot too. I guess that means my timeline is one step ahead of yours.”
Watching her continue to pick at her hair and the solidified, foul-smelling mucus caking her jacket, Pei Xiqing couldn’t help but ask, “What exactly happened to you out there?”
Ma Mengjia rolled her eyes aggressively. “Just thinking about it makes my blood boil! The headquarters was suddenly swarmed by an amphibious parasite siege, and the military vanguard locked down the surface. Command ordered all civilians to evacuate to the subterranean tunnels, but the guards at the entrance initially refused to let us through! They claimed they needed the tunnel space for engineering reinforcements. Who in their right mind would believe a pathetic excuse like that?
“I couldn’t stand the panic anymore, so I rallied a bunch of older brothers and sisters from the crowd, and we violently forced our way past the barricade. Who could have guessed that we’d run into a rogue cluster of parasites breaching the lower vents? The damn things spat their toxic slime all over me during the scramble. It was absolutely revolting.”
Recalling the trauma, she instinctively brought her stained sleeve to her nose to sniff it. The rancid, oxidized stench of the biological fluid instantly assaulted her senses. She gagged violently, clutching her stomach, and threw up right onto the tunnel floor.
Unlike Pei Xiqing’s dry heaves, Ma Mengjia vomited a mixture of half-digested food residue and bile. In the enclosed, poorly ventilated tunnel, the sour, fecal stench instantly made the air exponentially worse.
Ma Mengjia was clearly in terrible physical condition. Her face was a sickly, translucent pale in the dim emergency lighting, and she constantly rubbed her lower abdomen as she recovered. It was evident the pregnancy had been developing for some time.
“Exactly how far along are you?” Pei Xiqing asked.
“Two months.” She lowered her head, looking somewhat embarrassed.
“It has only been a little over two months since you abandoned the village.”
“Why does the timeline matter?” Ma Mengjia snapped defensively. “Brother Lin and I share a profound, genuine connection.”
Pei Xiqing took a deep breath, instantly deciding she had zero desire to engage with this logic any further.
If the girl was two months pregnant, that meant she had become intimately entangled with the mercenary the exact week Liu Dongshu’s convoy had recruited him. If Ma Mengxiang ever learned the reality of her sister’s survival tactics, the sheer migraine it would cause her would be legendary.
“I originally wanted to track down a decontamination shower and find some fresh clothes, but unfortunately, this tunnel is completely packed with hideous, desperate people.” Ma Mengjia made a sweeping, disgusted gesture, physically distancing herself from the terrified refugees huddled behind her. She then turned her attention back to Pei Xiqing. “But honestly, I only confirmed the pregnancy a few days ago. I was sitting in that holding room you arranged for me, waiting for Brother Lin to return. I had convinced myself I would never see him again, but he actually breached the lockdown to extract me. He has treated me exceptionally well ever since.”
“When is he scheduled to return to your coordinate?”
“The exact second I managed to contact his comms unit and report the pregnancy, he promised to extract me once the perimeter stabilizes.”
Pei Xiqing and Shadow exchanged a brief, telling look. The expression hidden behind the operative’s mask was undoubtedly difficult to describe.
“You don’t seriously think he only bothered to secure my extraction because of the child, do you?” Ma Mengjia demanded, sensing their skepticism.
Pei Xiqing maintained a flat tone. “Since you firmly believe this man is trustworthy and harbor zero doubts regarding his motives, my office has no intention of challenging your choices or decisions.”
Ma Mengjia chuckled, completely missing the underlying dismissal. “He is an elite officer within the military vanguard. After escorting me down to this checkpoint, he immediately deployed back to the surface to execute the parasites. The tactical situation up there should stabilize shortly. The exact second we see the sunlight again, I will absolutely arrange a formal introduction so you can meet him.”
She leaned in closer, offering a conspiratorial wink. “Given his rank, he might even be able to pull some strings and assist you and Brother Duan within the capital.”
Pei Xiqing genuinely didn’t understand the angle at first, nor could she fathom how this mercenary could possibly offer any meaningful political leverage to the Chief Judge of Franlun. It was only after a moment that she recalled Ma Mengjia’s earlier boast—claiming the man was the biological son of a high-ranking executive within the supreme headquarters.
She chose not to respond. The overpowering, acidic stench radiating from Ma Mengjia’s stained clothes was making her incredibly uncomfortable. After exchanging a few more empty pleasantries, Pei Xiqing turned to leave.
Ma Mengjia grabbed her sleeve, stopping her. “Where are you rushing off to?”
“I need to rest.”
“Look at yourself—you look even weaker and more pathetic than I do right now. What on earth happened to your baseline?” Ma Mengjia had clearly noticed Pei Xiqing’s deteriorated condition. Compared to the vibrant, capable woman she had been back in the village, her physical weakness was now startlingly visible to the naked eye.
“It is nothing you need to concern yourself with.”
“Then you had better watch your back in here,” Ma Mengjia warned lightly. “By the way, what’s the status on Ma Mengxiang? Did she ultimately refuse to migrate to the capital with your convoy, or did she defect to a peripheral base?”
“Her current coordinates are perfectly secure.” Pei Xiqing offered an irrelevant, non-committal answer, pulled her sleeve free, and walked away.
Ma Mengjia stood anchored in the crowded tunnel, staring at her retreating back, an unreadable, complex emotion churning in her eyes.
Shadow pushed open the reinforced door and ushered her back into the private room. “Regarding Ma Mengxiang—she successfully received the custom dagger your office dispatched. According to our tracking logs, she keeps it secured to her person at all hours. Whether she is chopping firewood in the dense mountain timber or harvesting crops in the valley, she never leaves the perimeter without it.”
“She appreciates the craftsmanship,” Pei Xiqing smiled. She sat down heavily in a chair and poured a glass of water from the carafe. “Brother Shadow, come over and hydrate.”
Taking a slow sip, she asked, “Has the village maintained its stability during this quarter-cycle?”
“They face zero external threats,” Shadow reported, accepting the glass. “The undead hordes and the parasite swarms are completely isolated by the surrounding mountainous terrain. They haven’t established a tracking vector toward that valley…”
Pei Xiqing paused. “What?”
Shadow took a massive gulp of water, quickly correcting his phrasing. “No, the village is exceptionally well fortified, and the civilian population remains resilient. Absolute security is guaranteed. Nothing catastrophic will breach their perimeter.”
Pei Xiqing instantly detected the subtle anomaly in his report. But before she could press him to clarify the discrepancy, a sudden, blinding spike of agony tore through her nervous system.
Her voice abruptly cut off.
The glass in her hand slipped through her numb fingers, shattering violently against the floorboards.
Shadow lunged forward, catching her collapsing frame before she hit the ground. As he secured her shoulders, his eyes locked onto her exposed arms in absolute horror. The skin was rapidly mutating—thick, blackened corpse spots were violently erupting across her flesh like a creeping network of dead vines. He immediately engaged his comms unit, desperately attempting to establish contact with the medical team on the surface.
While Pei Xiqing writhed in excruciating pain, her fading vision caught the horrific, accelerated necrosis spreading across her arms.
Her sensory perception of pain was returning with terrifying speed. And this time, the eruption of corpse spots was infinitely more ferocious and aggressive than any previous outbreak.
It appeared that the exact second the mysterious, protective substance within her body was finally eradicated, the true zombie virus that had been silently infecting her cells exploded into the open, multiplying as rapidly as mushrooms after a torrential rain.
This was the true, apocalyptic power of a baseline viral infection.
The corpse spots that had previously surfaced on her body had been aggressively suppressed by the Qiong Snake, appearing as nothing more than dark, harmless birthmarks.
But now… she could physically feel the necrosis ravaging her own skin.
Having lost nearly all of her external senses, her brain was forced to rely entirely on raw, physiological feedback to map the horror spreading across her flesh. The corpse spots were heavily textured, bumpy, and riddled with microscopic, rotting perforations. They were actively eroding her cellular structure, melting her flesh and blood from the inside out.
She didn’t need her failing vision to comprehend exactly how grotesque these mutations looked. She was becoming completely indistinguishable from the twisted, mutated zombies roaming the wastelands outside.
No matter how flawless or beautiful a person’s skin might be, the exact millisecond this horrific pathogen seized control, every single cell would be systematically corrupted. The host would begin to fester, rot, and emit the foul stench of death, decaying from the skin all the way down to the bone marrow.
Chapter 254: Take it Back
Pei Xiqing had long known this day would come, sooner or later.
She had thought of many ways to deal with it, but when the moment finally arrived, no one could truly be cruel enough to follow through.
Being stripped of the mysterious ability that had protected her since she first arrived in this world caused her agonizing pain, as if her very bones and skin were being violently ripped apart. Yet, she found it impossible to truly surrender and let it go.
She hadn’t experienced too many extreme ups and downs before the apocalypse, and sometimes she genuinely felt like she couldn’t fit into this world. Observing everything around her, she often harbored the illusion that she was merely an outsider looking in. However, the excruciating pain currently wracking her body constantly reminded her that she was trapped in this absurd, apocalyptic reality.
The original “Pei Xiqing” of this world’s plot had already turned into a zombie, doomed to spend the rest of her existence struggling among the mindless, undead hordes. Perhaps her fate was unchangeable. Perhaps she was destined to become a zombie no matter what she did. But she would never allow herself to fully devolve into one of those monsters, completely devoid of reason and emotion.
She bit down hard on the tip of her tongue, using the sharp burst of intense pain to forcibly drag her fading perception back. A trail of blood trickled down the corner of her mouth.
“Hold on!” Shadow scooped her up into his arms, rushing toward the door.
Suddenly, the door slammed open. Qiu Chao rushed in, the eyes behind his medical mask instantly locking onto Pei Xiqing. Taking in her horrifying condition, he immediately barked an order. “Lay her flat on the bed! Go notify Brother Duan to get here immediately!”
“Understood.” Shadow gently placed her down and darted out of the room.
Clinging to the very last shred of her rationality, Pei Xiqing reached out and grabbed Qiu Chao’s sleeve. He immediately began treating her bleeding and cleansing the dark necrosis erupting across her skin. “Trust me,” he urged quietly. “And trust Brother Duan.”
“I have something… to tell you…”
Qiu Chao seemed to understand the gravity in her eyes, but he immediately shut her down. “Whatever you have to say, wait until Brother Duan gets here. What you need to do right now is calm down and take deep breaths.”
He ripped the surgical mask off his face, tossing it aside as he fully concentrated on stabilizing her vitals. As he checked her metrics, his gaze suddenly flickered toward her in alarm. Pei Xiqing didn’t notice the strange look, and Qiu Chao quickly averted his eyes.
“This shouldn’t be happening,” he muttered in disbelief. “The serum I injected two days ago was supposed to keep your condition stable for at least ten days. Did you come into contact with any external triggers?”
Pei Xiqing weakly recalled the incident in the corridor. “I just ran into an old acquaintance… she smelled strongly of parasite fluid. It triggered a violent reaction, and I couldn’t stop vomiting… Could there be any consequences from that?”
“Why didn’t you inform me immediately that the stimulation made you vomit?!” Qiu Chao demanded, his frustration bleeding through. “Your body cannot handle extreme physical reactions right now!”
“I’m sorry… I didn’t know.”
“You likely threw up so violently that your system expelled the stabilizing agent, causing the medicine to completely lose its efficacy,” Qiu Chao concluded grimly.
Suddenly, a large, warm hand wrapped tightly around Pei Xiqing’s trembling fingers.
Duan Xiaolin had materialized beside her bed.
He was still wearing the exact same clothes from when he had left days ago. He looked travel-stained and exhausted, a faint shadow of stubble dusting his jawline. His silver-rimmed glasses glinted coldly, giving him an even more dangerously roguish edge than usual. Yet, despite the dust, he didn’t look disheveled. Instead, he radiated the same wild, untamed aggression she remembered from the very first day they met.
The man squeezed her hand tightly and shot an uncompromising look directly at the doctor. “Go and prepare.”
Qiu Chao exchanged a silent look with him, stood up, and nodded. “Understood.”
Pei Xiqing didn’t understand what they were preparing for, but she gripped his hand back with all her remaining strength. “Brother Duan… I have something to tell you.”
“I’m listening.” The man sat down slowly on the edge of the bed.
“I might be destined to become a zombie… but since I was able to endure the virus before, maybe I can do it again now. I’m not afraid of the price I have to pay.” She wanted to convey that she didn’t need that special substance to fight off the zombie virus; she could weather the storm herself.
In this apocalyptic world, even though Qiu Chao and his team had relentlessly studied the undead, they had never been intimately infected by the zombie virus like she had. To her, it felt less like a disease and more like a shackle—a heavy chain binding her, inextricably fused to her very being, impossible to sever.
Pei Xiqing looked deeply into the man’s eyes. She asked softly, “What are your shackles? Is it this base, doomed to destruction? The sprawling empire of Franlun? The lost Qiong Snake, or the unattainable freedom…?” And what about the people you cannot bring yourself to abandon?
Anyone else might have been baffled by her cryptic words. But the moment their eyes met, Duan Xiaolin instantly understood the depths of her heart.
He recalled the arrogant, weird, and conceited words Xiao Yue had spewed right before his death. Looking down at her, he responded with absolute conviction: “It doesn’t matter what you’ve seen or what you know, because I am going to pull you back.”
Pei Xiqing’s breath hitched.
A heartbeat later, her pulse pounded in her ears, deafeningly loud. She stared at the man beside her, momentarily struck speechless.
His dark eyes were ablaze with an absolute, unyielding determination to win. Whether facing catastrophic disasters or horrific monster invasions, nothing could truly shake him. He always handled it all with terrifying ease.
An inexplicable sense of peace washed over her.
“Leave it all to me. Go to sleep, and when you wake, everything will be fine,” he murmured. His deep voice was so hypnotic and comforting that Pei Xiqing felt a dizzying wave of exhaustion crash over her, her consciousness rapidly blurring.
She felt his large, calloused hand gently cover her eyes. The physical sensation grounded her—it was a paradoxical mix of warm sunlight and cold seawater. Clinging to the very last thread of her rationality, Pei Xiqing gripped his wrist.
“I need to know… will this method of yours hurt you?”
“It won’t,” he promised softly.
“Will it hurt Qiu Chao, Shadow, or the others?”
“No.”
“Then who will it hurt?” She refused to accept a solution that required someone else to sacrifice their life.
He stroked her hair comfortingly. “It won’t hurt anyone. The cost is just a few insignificant things.”
His absolute certainty finally soothed her tense, frayed nerves. The desperate grip she had on his arm slowly loosened.
“I still want to try to overcome it myself,” she mumbled drowsily. “If you trust me just a little… it might not be impossible…”
“I will not allow you to take any more risks. You don’t need to worry about this anymore,” he replied, his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument.
“But I…”
“Hush. Believe me, you will be completely healed after a good sleep.”
“Mhm…”
Tens of thousands of possibilities swirled through Pei Xiqing’s fading mind, but in the end, she simply lacked the energy to chase them. Sinking deeply into the mattress, she surrendered to the dark and gradually slipped into a coma.
Chapter 255: Not a Waste
After Pei Xiqing closed her eyes, her consciousness slipped entirely into a deep, heavy coma. She no longer experienced the usual dreamlike flashes of the plot’s past or future; there was only a quiet, absolute void.
After an unknown amount of time, her eyelids twitched, and she slowly opened her eyes.
Seeing the familiar ceiling and the layout of the room, she stared in stunned silence.
Wasn’t this… the village where she and Duan Xiaolin had lived together for over two months?
It was the exact same house. The second-floor bedroom they had shared.
A familiar voice sounded near her ear. She turned her head and saw Ma Mengxiang walking in with a tray of food. Pei Xiqing’s lips parted slightly. “You…”
Ma Mengxiang smiled at her brightly. “What’s the matter? It’s been a while, but don’t tell me you’ve forgotten who I am.”
“How did I get back here?”
“Brother Duan brought you back a few days ago.” Ma Mengxiang sat down on a chair, placing a bowl of warm porridge and some side dishes on the nightstand. Seeing Pei Xiqing staring blankly without blinking, she waved a hand in front of her face, amused. “Hey, come back to earth. What are you thinking about? You just woke up and need to eat something to regain your strength. If you keep spacing out, you won’t recover properly.”
Pei Xiqing blinked her sore eyes and asked urgently, “Where is Brother Duan? Why was I sent back here?”
“Oh, Brother Duan said you were incredibly weak and needed a quiet place to rest, just like before, so he brought you back. You were fast asleep in his arms when he arrived.”
“Where are the others?”
“I’m not too sure about that. How would I know their whereabouts? But he has been coming back to check on you every single day. It’s just that you’ve been deeply asleep this whole time, so I could only feed you via glucose drips.”
“How long have I been asleep?”
Ma Mengxiang thought for a moment. “Ten days. Brother Duan brought you back ten days ago, and I’ve counted the days, coming over to take care of you every morning. Today makes exactly ten days.”
Pei Xiqing rubbed her aching temples and forced herself to sit up.
Ma Mengxiang quickly reached out to support her. “How are you feeling?”
“I’m alright. Thank you, Mengxiang.”
“It’s nothing. I haven’t even properly thanked you for the dagger you gave me. It’s incredibly sharp and literally saved my life not too long ago. If I hadn’t had it, I wouldn’t have made it back from the mountains.”
“I’m glad it could help you.” Pei Xiqing glanced at the dark sky outside the window. “What day is it today?”
“It’s already a brand new month.”
Seeing Pei Xiqing slide out of bed and prepare to leave, Ma Mengxiang anxiously tried to hold her back. “Hey, hey! You just woke up, and your body hasn’t fully recovered! Why are you in such a rush to go outside?”
Pei Xiqing felt weak all over, but fortunately, a large portion of her perception and vision had finally returned.
She had absolutely no idea what had transpired over the past ten days.
Why had she been brought back here? What was the situation with Duan Xiaolin, Qiu Chao, Ling Lang, and the others… and what had happened to the headquarters?
This complete void of information and the terrifyingly fast passage of time filled her with a rising panic. She couldn’t afford to care about her physical weakness right now.
Pushing past Ma Mengxiang, Pei Xiqing slipped on her shoes and hurried out the door.
Her steps were slightly unsteady, her face pale. A few strands of long, dark hair fell loosely across her forehead, partially obscuring her striking eyes.
The cold moonlight spilled across the courtyard. The temperature outside had dropped significantly. Wearing only thin indoor clothes, she couldn’t suppress a shiver as the crisp night air hit her.
Ma Mengxiang chased after her with a coat, but before she could drape it over Pei Xiqing’s shoulders, someone else beat her to it, wrapping a heavy military greatcoat securely around her back.
A masked man had appeared out of nowhere to stand beside her. His suffocating, murderous aura felt entirely out of place in the peaceful village.
“San She?”
“Yes,” the operative nodded. “Brother Duan is currently back at headquarters. You are perfectly safe here. There is no crisis at headquarters; everything is under control.”
Shadow vaulted down from the roof, landing lightly nearby. “I was just repairing some roof tiles for the villagers. I didn’t expect to be a step too slow.” He sounded mildly annoyed with himself. “Thanks for the assist, Brother San She.”
San She offered a curt, emotionless nod. In the pale moonlight, the mask hiding his face radiated a biting, metallic chill.
Knowing he was a core member of Franlun and a loyal teammate made his presence tolerable, but she couldn’t fathom how terrifying it would be to have a man like this as an enemy.
“This coat belongs to Brother Duan, so you don’t need to feel uneasy wearing it,” San She stated, his voice completely devoid of inflection. “I only follow his orders, and my order is to protect you.”
“Thank you very much.”
“You’re welcome,” he replied flatly. “Brother Duan will be here shortly. He is currently occupied, so Miss Pei may have to wait a little while.”
“How long do we have to wait?”
“I don’t have a precise timeline for that.”
“I want to go see him.” Pei Xiqing looked up at him. “Is that possible?”
San She lowered his gaze. His machine-like pupils revealed absolutely no emotion. Still, out of respect for her, he answered, “You can ask me any questions you have. I know the full tactical picture. Headquarters is currently advising that you do not travel there for the time being.”
“What exactly happened at headquarters?”
“Someone deliberately weaponized the corpses from the Ghost Market and the black zones, engineering them into mutant zombies and parasites. Franlun is currently settling the score.”
Pei Xiqing understood instantly. “So… the fact that the headquarters was surrounded by a massive parasite siege was an intentional, man-made attack?”
“Yes.”
“What did the Marshal have to say about this?”
“Fu Yan was the mastermind behind it.”
San She didn’t even bother attaching the title of Marshal to the man’s name.
Pei Xiqing stared at him in shock.
Aside from Qiu Chao and Shadow, San She was the third high-ranking member of Franlun she had formally met. While Shadow operated more as a personal guard, San She and Qiu Chao were the true inner circle of the organization.
If San She alone was this frighteningly efficient, the rest of Franlun’s elite operatives were likely cut from the exact same lethal cloth.
Pei Xiqing took a slow, deep breath, forcing herself to calm down.
She had witnessed Brother Duan’s terrifying capabilities firsthand many times. Though he could be ruthless, indifferent, and cold-blooded to the rest of the world, he had never truly frightened her.
“Then I must go to headquarters to see for myself,” she declared.
“Understood.” San She didn’t argue. He simply gave a curt nod of agreement. “But are you certain your body can handle the transit? I have zero desire to see you collapse again halfway there.”
“Cough…” Pei Xiqing covered her mouth, steadying herself. “I actually feel like my physical strength has grown significantly.”
“It seems Qiu Chao actually possesses some utility and isn’t a complete waste of rations,” San She remarked dryly.
The very next second, a voice suddenly crackled through the air.
“You’re the waste! Your entire bloodline is a waste!”
San She pressed a button on his earpiece, broadcasting Qiu Chao’s voice over the external communicator.
Qiu Chao’s voice echoed out indignantly. “I am currently stationed at headquarters. I’ve been monitoring your vitals remotely. You are stable, but my professional recommendation is to continue resting. If you are absolutely determined to come see me, then fine, make the trip. But Third Brother, you had better drive slow and steady. If you hit a bump and make my patient throw up, you are finished.”
San She’s response was deadpan. “Drive slower? That is not within my capabilities.”
The word ‘slow’ did not exist in his dictionary. There were no speed limits in the apocalypse, and he was long accustomed to pinning the accelerator to the floorboards.
“Then don’t say I didn’t warn you,” Qiu Chao retorted smoothly over the comms. “Your future nieces and nephews will absolutely despise you.”
